NEW – Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens

So the hype about the New Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens has being flowing around for sometime.

So this ultra wide angle manual focus 15mm f/2 lens is going for a relatively modest $850, and it’s designed for the full frame format (FE). The lens is a rectilinear design with optical elements optimized for limiting distortion. The fast f/2 aperture makes this lens a prime candidate for astrophotography and other low light use in addition to landscape and architecture of course.

Also featuring a 5.9″ minimum focus distance, which can give you killer separation and depth of field effects not normally as easy at such wide angles…
The optical design includes three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements to help handle both chromatic and spherical aberrations which will then provide sharpness, clarity, and reduced color fringing.

A Frog Eye Coating has been applied, too, to repel dust and moisture from the front element of the lens to benefit working in trying environmental conditions, and A+ for that lens coating name!
If you plan on using this with a crop factor camera your looking at 22.5mm effective focal length.
The manual aperture ring also has a de-click option, which is killer for smooth aperture transitions when recording video in particular.

The Filter thread is only 72mm which was pretty surprising considering the f/2 speed of this lens!

Closing Remarks

It’s nice to see more quality ultra wide angle fast lenses on the market for Sony Full Frame E-Mount coverage. For $850 the New Venus Optics Laowa 15mm f/2 FE Zero-D Lens looks like a pretty good lens to me build wise, but not to sure about the optical quality detail without seeing the actual images. Distortion control however, does look amazing!
