I had the pleasure of shooting some real world photos with the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens this week on Vacation!! Oh Yeah 😉 Anyway I took some real world sample pics in all different situation and the Sigma performed quite well. Shooting wide open at f/1.4, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 appears to be sharp and the separation you can get from your subjects is magnificent for an APS-C sized image sensor like the Sony A57 has. The HSM focus is also very fast, accurate, and quiet from what I’ve seen so far. I do notice a significant amount of purple Chromatic Aberrations on ultra high contrast subjects in the center of the frame, but that is very common for this type of lens. In fact the top quality Canon 85mm f/1.4 L Lens does the same thing wide open.
I didn’t use a tripod for any of these shots, so the lower shutter speed might be just a tad soft.
I also did not use manual focus at all yet just to let you know.
A Few Sample Photos
I went to the Mall with the Family in these first few images, and also be sure to Click on the Photos for the 1200px Version!!
Closing remarks
So far I think the lens is really solid for a price tag of $499 US, and I’m really looking forward to doing some “Lab” style tests to check the corner sharpness etc.. These sample pics should give you a pretty good sense of what can be done with this lens, and if you have any requests or questions please just fire away below in the comments.
