Hey guys! In this quick video I will test the new Sony A7r II w/ my older Metabones III lens adapter and my killer Canon EF 24-105 f/4 L IS Lens. Specific to this video, I will test speed of the center focus mode, Eye AF, and Continuous AF mode (AF-C) for focus tracking purposes and a hit rate test using speed priority shooting mode w/ a moving subject. My Dad was more than willing to help me and is always fun to work with 🙂
I was using a tri-pod and really tried my best to illustrate the focus tracking abilities and the hit rate you could expect when using this combination in a similar environment.
I also took several sample photos using this combination, so you can see what kind of Image quality you can achieve as well. I love this lens output quality and bokeh renderings, which is why I barely every took it off my Canon back in the day. It was this lens or the 70-200mm for 90% of what I did. Occasionally I would use the EF 17-40mm f/4 L lens for the wide angle stuff, and the EF 135mm f/2 L Lens for the killer separation and low light shooting found at wedding receptions and what not. To bad that 135mm f/2 lens does not work with the Metabones II for crap… The 17-40mm lens however, works just as good as the 24-105mm which is nice. Great for landscapes and I will certainly take a few snaps using that lens soon…

Sony A7r II – Focus Testing w/ Canon EF 24-105 f/4 L IS Lens
The bottom line?
The auto focus is really good using the 24-105mm Canon EF lens, but is still not as good or as accurate as a Native E-Mount lens. This is totally understandable, considering how much Sony relies on the lenses to work in combination with the cameras. Some features like Eye-AF didn’t work, and the keeper rate is not near as high, although pretty darn good! The facial recognition technology still works which really helps, but with narrow depth of fields the Eye-AF is a great to have. I would suggest using the small flexible spot focus point instead to insure the focus is on the eyes of your subjects when using lenses like this without the Eye-AF feature.
I could use the Lens image stabilization or the cameras, but not both at the same time. I went with the camera IBIS system for the sample photos below.

All these sample photo snap shots were taken in Jpeg mode and are straight off the camera with no correction at all. Auto ISO, Auto WB, Average Metering Mode, Facial recognition ON, Skin Smoothing On – Medium, Re-sized to 1000px for web and saved out at 90% quality from Lightroom 5.
