UnBoxing The New Lenses and A Few 24-240mm Sample Photos

Sony FE 24-240mm @ 240mm, f/6.3, 1/250sec

Hello again everybody and in this quick article I will share the unboxing video of all the new gear including: Zeiss Touit 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens,  FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS lens, FE 28mm f/2 lens plus the 21mm Ultra-Wide Conversion Lens and the  16mm Fisheye Conversion Lens.

I also managed to take a few sample photos with the 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS lens and so far I am very impressed with the image quality and sharpness when shooting raw. Some distortion at 24mm, but not horrible and the zoom versatility is really powerful as you will see below.

Please feel free to ask questions and or comment below guys 😉

UnBoxing The New Sony Lenses

FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens

A Few Sample Photos

I took a few sample photos with the FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens using my Sony A7r all hand held. The results so far look pretty good, but I have not had time to do any critical analysis just yet.
I used raw quality and exported from Lightroom 5 as jpegs 80% Quality, standard sharpening for web. In Lightroom I added a medium contrast tone curve, because the raw file are pretty flat with no contrast added at all. My Lightroom does not have the lens profile, so no lens correction was applied either. Some distortion is noticeable, but nothing that can’t be corrected easily. Sony Jpegs straight off the camera have much more contrast, sharpening, and saturation compared to raw files encase you were not aware.

Closing Remarks

So far I’m impressed with the versatility of the FE 24-240mm lens on the full frame format. It is a bit heavy, but I got used to that pretty quick. The quarter turn zoom range is also a bit harder than ideal, but it is nice to do a full range jump in one turn. I think this is what Sony had in mind with this design, but I could be wrong.

Several of the 240mm shots have been just slightly softer than ideal with my A7r. I’m not sure if this is the shutter slap issue, my hand-holding, or the lens just yet. Usually I can hand hold pretty effectively, but this lens has some serious zoom which amplifies vibrations. I will do much more testing with a tri-pod and higher shutter speeds to find out the deal with this lens. All this being said, the lens results are still impressing me all around based on the few snapshots I took so far with it.

My Review of the Sony FE 24-240mm Lens is now Up Here >>

  1. I am really on the fence with this one. I have the A7ii and really want a nice , powerful zoom. I don’t want to have to go outside using adapters, etc and other zooms to get the 10x zoom capabilities. IQ is a concern…….portability and being able to use the whole sensor with the lens as well……

    1. Hi David,
So far the lens is pretty good. It’s not tack sharp and does have some corner softness when wide open at 240mm I’m noticing so far. However, the colors, focus, bokeh, and real world versatility is making it a blast to use 🙂 So fun and easy with “real world” great results!
So far, it looks like this lens is going to be a very solid value for the dollar considering the range, versatility, and output quality for $998 US. A Zeiss badged version of this lens would probably cost $2k and most could not afford.
      Jay

  2. Hey Jay,
Did you try this lens with the a6000? As a6K is APS-C, it means that this lens will be 36-360 which I think is biggest telephoto zoom lens for native e-mount (yes you can find from other brands but usually the adapters “kill” the auto focus performance so it’s not a very good option.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eliyahu

    1. Hello,
I have not tried the lens on the A6000, but I do have my Nex-6 and will certainly try it out 😉 Thanks for the request and reminder!
      Jay

      1. Purchased this for the A6000 and am extremely happy with lens so far. I tested FE 70-200 and found I was swapping lenses far to frequently for wider shots, and that’s been less of an issue with the 24 – 240.

  3. With in the pass Two Years I have purchased Two Sony Alpha Body Cameras, the A77 in late 2013 and the full frame A99 March of this Year. I love them both. However at this point in time both Cameras are out of date. The A77 price drip $300.00 dollars 36 days after I Purchased the camera, at that point in time I new something will be introduced, and it was. The A77II, however I preferred the my version.
I have seven (7) Sony and Zeiss Alpha Mounts lenses.
Sony has released there latest and grates new camera The A7RII body.
I love the fill and weight of my A77 and A99 with battery grips. Is Sony planning to upgrade this series bodies to 47 to 50 megapixels? I have held the A7II cameras body with the 24 t-70mm E mount lens, and field is a little top heavy and small in my hand.
What new, when you thank you have the latest and grates new introduced.
