Sony RX10 Lab Testing: – High ISO and Lens Tests, RX10 vs Nex-6 vs A7?

In this article I will go over the Sony RX10 lab testing including high ISO and lens tests at various focal lengths. I will also go through the aperture so you can see the depth of field and how it changes with focal length. Next I will go over how the one inch sensor RX10 performs in the lab vs the much larger sensor Nex-6, and A7 cameras. What does sensor size get you at ~50mm equivalent focal lengths in the lab? See below..

Quality optics make a big difference, and the only issue for the Sony RX10, is the 20.2mp sensor pixel density. That means the individual pixels are really small compared to the Nex-6 APS-C 16.1mp sensor for example. Physically smaller and more pixels equals less quality most of the time. The smaller sensor will also yield different results in the depth of field department as you will also see below.

Sony RX10 Lab Testing

I used pretty much the same exact lab setup as the Sony A7 vs Nex-6 tests (Click Here), because it was already setup, but also for comparison purposes. I’m working on refining the lab into a more consistent and flexible model, but it’s pretty hard to figure out. Covering all focal lengths is pretty much the issue, so I need to make something adjustable. I’m also trying to figure out what materials will provide the best results for real world detail and resolution testing purposes. I can buy resolution test charts and stuff, but I want to use real world items for everything. The lab is a work in progress to say the least, and your suggestion are always welcome 😉

Here is the full lab scene first, then the 100% crops for all the apertures tested will fallow. At 200mm the background defocus is awesome and looks much like a DSLR almost. Note the circular specular highlights until f/8 where it starts to polygon a bit.

Sony A7 vs Nex-6 vs RX10 – Lab

This is basically what you get @ 50mm using the same scene, tripod location, and distance to subject/ focal point. These are approximate, but close enough for illustration purposes I think. Also worth noting is the resolutions are different for each camera sensor, therefore the crop is not exactly the same. The lighting was not configured the same way, so the white balance is not consistent from camera to camera for these tests. Sorry about that.

Depth of Field Comparison Test @ 50mm, f/4

The point of this test is to demonstrate what the different sensor size gives you in the depth of field department. Clearly the Sony A7 full frame renders much different than the smaller sensors, and it’s not always so easy to tell in the real world photos.

High ISO – RX10 VS Nex-6 VS A7

ISO 12800 is as high as the RX10 goes, so that will be the one I compare here. The resolution of each sensor makes a difference, so take that into consideration when viewing these photos.

Closing Remarks:

rx10-backAs you can see from these lab test photos, the Sony RX10 performs pretty good overall. The lens is a little softer @ f/2.8 but not by much. The corners hold up really well under all conditions from what I can tell, and I used only raw quality images for the lens tests. The camera probably did some lens correction on the raw files, but the bottom line is they look excellent. Fringing and chromatic aberrations are almost non existent.

Considering the pixel density of the 1″ RX10 sensor, the high ISO performance is very good in my opinion. Especially when compared to the Nex-6.

It’s hard to say image quality is awesome when comparing to the larger sensor cameras, but for the size sensor it has,  IQ is great 😉 In the real world the image quality looks very good and what you are losing in fine detail sensor quality, you gain in the f/2.8 constant aperture Zeiss lens.

That lens, the rugged build quality, and awesome video make the RX10 extremely usable and fun for the real world photography enthusiasts looking for the perfect all in one camera. This camera may just be the best compromise between sensor quality, optical range/ speed, camera body size, build quality, and features.
