Sony PlayMemories Camera Apps – Expand the Power of Your Sony Camera

Sony-playmemories-apps

Sony recently announced a few new PlayMemories Camera Apps, and in this article I will go over all the Apps currently available for the Sony cameras worth consideration.

What are Camera Apps and why do I want or need them?

Camera Apps basically turn your camera into an evolving piece of equipment with software. The Apps run independent from the camera normal camera function and are self contained pretty much. In other words you can upgrade your camera with more software style features via Apps. Very similar to how it works on a smart phone for example, expet you can only run one App at a time as far as I can tell.

Some of the Apps are pretty hardcore programs, and it’s understandable why Sony would not want to incorporate that into the camera software itself. It would most likely slow everything down and open up the door for unwanted glitche’s etc.. Having them work as stand alone programs, avoids all this and gives the Apps much more wiggle room with the interface and more..

If you want even more info on the Sony Playmemories Apps, Mike Hendren also wrote an excellent intro article, I recommend checking out, titled “Getting Started with Apps on your Nex-5r or Nex-6″ (Click Here)

Sony PlayMemories Camera Apps

Below are all the PlayMemories Apps for your Sony Nex-6, Nex-5R, and Nex-5T worth consideration if you want to expand your creativity and user experience with the camera. Let’s face it, if it’s fun to use and the results are good, why not?? Read on more specific details on each App I recommend checking out.

lens-compensationLens Compensation – New

Basically what the Lens Compensation App allows you to do is make custom profiles on a per lens bases. You can then save the profiles and apply them as needed. Awesome looking App and totally worth consideration. I will get it at some point, but I’m pinching penny’s at the moment 😉

Lens Compensation Instruction Manual >>

This app lets users manually select correction values for lens peripheral shading, chromatic aberration and distortion. By saving the correction values as a lens profile, the same correction can be applied while shooting anytime.

  • Peripheral Shading: Corrects brightness and the intensity of reds and blues around the edges of images
  • Chromatic Aberration: Corrects red and blue lateral aberration
  • Distortion: Corrects barrel and pincushion distortion

portrait-lightingPortrait Lighting – New

The Portrait Lighting App is basically a portrait editing program that enhances the files for a more flattering look. Basically it does a little Photoshop type magic to your portrait, so you can get a great result off camera with no editing work. I assume this would be a more advanced version of the skin softening feature

This app lets users easily accentuate people’s faces and take stunning portrait photos by adjusting the contrast and lighting level. In the past, lighting for portrait photography required skill and expertise, but this app makes it easy for anyone to recreate portrait lighting effects. The lighting level can be selected from one of five levels or set with a custom setting. With the custom setting, users can choose from six levels of emphasis on the person or the background.

motion-shotMotion Shot – New

Motion Shot is a pretty awesome effect that requires masking and layer blending in Photoshop to achieve and have it look good. This App does it on camera and again like the other apps, takes the post processing work out of the equation.

Get Motion Shot for $4.99 @ Sony (Click Here)

Express the breathtaking dynamism and energy of fast-moving subjects. A sequence of shots taken in continuous shooting mode are superimposed to make one truly expressive photo of action scenes like sports, speeding vehicles and other similar subjects. You can choose the first and last images of the sequence, adjust spacing between images and customize other settings. This app makes one copy from the sequence of photos, leaving the originals untouched.

bracket-proBracket Pro

Bracket Pro is a really advanced App that allows you to create an adjustable range of shots with varying settings. Perfect or getting multiple exposure’s for HDR Photography, or to try and find the best shutter speed for the look you want on water. You can also bracket the aperture if you want to find the best depth of field in a given scene. This is a powerful App that can be taken advantage of in several ways, for a variety of reasons, and for that I highly recommend it!

Get Bracket Pro for $4.99 @ Sony (Click Here)

This lets you automatically bracket photos by shutter speed, aperture, focus or flash.
With just one press of the shutter the camera snaps three shots at different shutter speed, aperture or focus settings, or two photos (one with flash and the other without).
Bracketing assures that photos have just the right look, especially if you are unsure about the proper settings.
After shooting you can select the best shot from the bracketed images.
By eliminating the need to manually change settings and take multiple shots, you are more likely to get the best results possible and not miss a memorable moment or expression.

 Time-Lapsetime-lapse

I have the Time-Lapse App and it’s totally worth the money if your lazy and don’t want to post process the massive amount of data yourself. This will spit out a finished product for your that is ready to share. I will put together a tutorial on the interface and a few sample results when I get some extra time. I have a few  clips though and the results are great in my opinion for my purposes. Do I really need better quality than what this pumps out? If so I do it the old fashioned way with a intervalometer.

Get Time-Lapse for $9.99 @ Sony (Click Here)

This app automatically shoots a series of still images at intervals then combines them into one movie. It’s so easy to use: just select a time-lapse mode that most closely resembles what you are shooting and let the camera do the rest! The proper settings are automatically made for you, eliminating the need for time-consuming trial and error.
Eight time-lapse themes are available: Cloudy Sky, Night Sky, Night Scene, Sunset, Sunrise, Miniature, Standard, Custom. You can choose to save the still images as a series of photos instead of a movie.

Picture-Effect+Picture Effect+

Picture Effect+ I also have and use the Illustration Mode on my Nex-6 all the time. That feature does not come stock on the Nex-6. The partial color feature is also much more power as are other effects in this app. Totally worth having this Free App for fun shots.

Get Picture Effect+ for Free @ Sony (Click Here)

This comprehensive collection of Picture Effects comes with six new effects allowing you to truly express yourself through your pictures
• Partial Color+ lets you select up to two colors before turning the image in to a black and white photo. Any object with the selected colors remain as colored highlights, creating eye-catching accents.
• Soft High-Key+ lends a light, airy look to photos by changing the ambience of the lighting. Choose from blue, pink or green as the soft high-key color.
• Miniature+ expands on the conventional Miniature function, letting you combine it with either Toy Camera or Retro Photo for truly unique photos.
• Toy Camera+ lets you control the brightness of the vignette in a Toy Camera photo.
• Watercolor transforms any image into a lovely photo resembling a delicate watercolor.
• Illustration creates bright punchy images with subjects starkly outlined much like you would find in comic books or cartoons.

Smart-Remote-ControlSmart Remote Control

The Smart remote Control is a very basic free App that allows you to remote control the camera using your smart phone. When this App first came out it was a little funky, but has since been re-fined and works very well. I recommend checking this App out if you have the need to remote control your camera.

Get Smart Remote Control for Free @ Sony (Click Here)

Smart remote Control Instruction Manual >>

This lets you control the camera with a smartphone. You’ll find it a great help for group photos when the camera is mounted on a tripod. You can control exposure and shutter release — all from your smartphone! And for added convenience, photos shot using the application will be automatically sent to your smartphone for on-the-spot sharing.
Note: Requires installation of PlayMemories Mobile 2.X on the smartphone.

Closing Remarks:

That is about it for now with the Sony PlayMemories Apps, but be sure to stay tuned for the Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Lens review I am working on behind the scenes 😉 I also added a few more awesome mirrorless cameras to AllYourCameraReviews.com, if you would like to check that out. I still have about 30-40 cameras I need to add before the website is current and really useful, but It’s certainly starting to take shape I think! Thoughts?? Specific cameras you want added? Please let me know…

Please feel free to ask questions, and/or let me know what you think of the Apps.

Have a great day,

Jay

I used the smart remote control when it first came out and was dismayed that it can only shoot in jpg.

    • Jay

Thanks for the comments Bob. It is a bit limiting, because the images are instantly transfered to the smartphone. I don’t think Raw files would be ideal for most folks who use the App. I agree it would be nice to have all option available.

      Jay

  2. Full tested the Timelapse app, rather good but u cant change exposure during the timelapse, no way to do bulb ramping ;(

  3. FlavioRoss

After the last month update, the apps are running more smoother in the NEX 6. Not perfect, but not laggy anymore.
And Sony is going to release the new version of the Remote app this month. You can not only shoot and set the exposure compensation, but now control the ISO, F number, shutter speed, WB, picture size, touch to focus and more, all from the smartphone. Sounds good to me. 😀

    • Jay

Thant sounds awesome Flavio, Thanks for the update! The touch to focus and take the shot is a really awesome feature and takes the fun level up a notch 😉 I think I might get one of those lens cameras soon….

    Hello Jay !
For your information, on my iPad mini, it’s absolutely impossible to read an article. The page is always scrolling alone… 🙁
    Thanks for your excellent website,
    Guy

    Hi.. jay

Is there a way to shoot timelapse using smartphone app for A77 mark II?
I tried hard but can not find any option for doing so. If not with smartphone what are the other option… sory I am a newbee in this area?

    thank you

    • Jay

      Hello Ani,

Honestly I don’t know. I thought the Apps were compadible with the A77II, but I guess not all of them are? It says on the Sony website under the A77II features, that the Smart Remote (Click Here) will work. But on the Playmemories website it’s not listed under the compatible cameras.

I would suggest given Sony a call, because if the apps work you can just use the timelapse app!

      I hope that helps,
      Jay
