In this Sony Alpha Lens Guide I put together all the A-Mount Lenses currently available and direct links to the best vender’s on the web so you don’t have to bother doing the re-search yourself!!
Lens manufactures include on this page are Sony, Rokinon, Bower, Samyang, Tokina, Vivitar, Lensbaby, and Schneider.
I created separate pages for the Sigma and Tamron A-mount lenses due to the shear quantity they both offer. Sigma offers over 40 lenses for the Sony A-mount alone, and Tamron has around 16 or so. The other companies only have a few, but there still worth checking out for sure! Schneider for example makes one of the best lenses in the world for perspective control. Check them out when you get a few minutes if your curious and I appreciate your patients as I update this page!!

Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* Lens – SAL2470Z
The SAL-2470Z Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar f2.8 24-70mm Zoom Lens is a Top Quality all-around performer with SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) design for fast, silent auto-focus and pro-quality Carl Zeiss T coated optics to reduce lens flare. The Optics are made up of 17-element design with two aspherical and two ED glass lens elements to minimize distortion and virtually eliminate chromatic aberration. The 24-70mm also benefits from the Super SteadyShot image stabilization built into every Sony system DSLR and its wide-angle to medium telephoto range and compact, lightweight design is ideal for a wide range of shooting applications. The 35mm equivalent = 36-105mm effective zoom
Sample Photos Using the A57 >>
Features
- Compact Design, All-Around Versatility: This superb 24-70mm zoom lens is an excellent choice for a wide range of photo applications – a lens you can put on and leave on, providing large-aperture brightness that’s easy to carry (35mm equivalent: 36-105mm)
- Superior Large-Aperture Performance: Like other large-aperture Carl Zeiss lens designs, this f2.8 24-70mm zoom lens is simply magnificent in its ability to capture brilliant high-resolution images in low-light conditions requiring fully open aperture
- In-Camera Image Stabilization: A major reason for its compact, lightweight design is the benefit of Super SteadyShot in-camera image stabilization, built into every Sony a system DSLR – and enabling accessory lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms
- SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor): Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied
- Carl Zeiss T Coating: Coated optics were pioneered by Carl Zeiss – and this superb lens features T (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates the lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces
- Multi-Element Design: The SAL-2470Z is designed with 17 lens elements in 13 groups, including 2 aspherical elements and 2 ED glass elements. Floating motion between the third and fourth groups of lens elements helps compensate for any aberrations caused by the zooming action of the lens
- Glass-Molded Aspherical Lens Elements: These precision lens elements correct distortion for sharper, more visually accurate images across the entire zoom range of the lens
- ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass: Because light of different wavelength (or color) bends at different angles when it passes through a lens, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass is used in Carl Zeiss lenses to eliminate chromatic aberration by correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images

Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 APO G(D) SSM Autofocus Lens – SAL70200G
The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 APO G(D) SSM Autofocus Lens is one of those must have lenses for sure! If your a regular reader you probably know I have all Canon Pro gear from my wedding and portrait days, and included in that gear is the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS. The reason I’m bringing that up is because that focal length zoom is great on any camera pretty much and all manufactures make a version of it due to demand. I was able to test out the Sony 70-200mm a while back using the Sony A55 and just like the Canon 70-200mm, it’s incredible!! Tack sharp at all focal ranges, and the bokeh is like butter. The zoom is also silky smooth and very easy to use.

Bower 14mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Manual Focus Lens
The Bower 14mm f/2.8 Wide Angle Manual Focus Lens features two high-precision aspherical elements and two ED-glass elements. This results in better contrast and sharpness at the outer edges, and a reduction in chromatic aberrations that can sometimes be seen with high-resolution digital SLRs.
This bright lens provides an ultra wide 92.5° angle view in digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors and a 114° angle of view when used with full frame DSLRs* so you can capture sweeping vistas, dramatic architectural compositions and panoramas. Additionally, its minimum focusing distance of only 11″ (0.28 m) will allow you to move in close on your subjects to achieve amazing perspectives. With a fast f/2.8 aperture photographers can create dynamic photographs that take full advantage of the characteristics of the lens.
* Note: Though this lens will cover the imaging sensor of a full-frame DSLR, it is better optimized for use with DSLRs containing smaller APS-C format sensors. As such you might notice softer focus and some light fall-off towards the edges of the frame when using a full-frame DSLR. If you do plan on using this lens with a full-frame DSLR we recommend you set the lens no wider (faster) than f/8 for optimum image quality.

Bower 85mm f/1.4 Manual Focus Lens
The Bower 85mm f/1.4 Manual Focus Lens is a special effort in the independent lens manufacturer world, being a popular focal length for serious portraiture combined with an extra large f/1.4 maximum aperture. Most independent manufacturer lenses are either zooms or very short or long focal length fixed lenses. This lens is precision manufactured in South Korea.
This lens mounts to any Sony (or Minolta Maxxum) camera and works on both “full frame” cameras like the DSLR-A900 as well as the “APS-C” style digital SLR cameras, but the aperture is neither communicated to nor controlled by the camera body. As such, you can use the lens in “M” manual exposure mode or “A” aperture-priority mode only, and in both cases you will physically move the aperture ring to the aperture of your choice and it will stay at that aperture even before the exposure.
With a 35mm equivalent focal length of ~127mm and that f/1.4 aperture, this Bower 85mm lens opens up photographic opportunities you’ll never get with your zoom. Capture close portraits of singers on dark stages with only spotlights on their faces, and those background lights will be soft cascades of low-contrast coloring. With the big f/1.4 opening, you’ll have enough light to stop subject motion. Or try it in brighter conditions at fast shutter speeds and low ISOs to make great shots of people in front of blooming trees, with background flowers almost looking like paintings. It isn’t easy nailing manual focus at f/1.4-2.0 (nor for that matter is it easy for an AF system), but you’ll get better with practice, and soon be making many snaps that stand out in a crowd.
This lens was truly created with large-aperture shooting in mind. Though a fine performer with plenty of contrast and resolution at f/5.6-f/11 apertures, it is at its best shooting between f/1.4-2.8, where it presents a high-peak-resolution focus point surrounded by lower resolution/contrast out-of-focus areas. Rather than just sharpness all around, for many pictures it is this stark drop off in resolution and contrast that effectively draws a viewer’s eye towards a subject.
Features
- Bright f/1.4 aperture
- Aspherical lens element provides high quality images
- Fully multicoated optics
- Ideal portrait lens
- Low weight relative to many 85mm f/1.4 lenses
- Smooth helicoid manual focus action
- Internal focusing means that lens length remains constant during focusing (lens front also does not rotate)
- Made in South Korea

Tokina
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Lens
The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX Lens is an ultra wide angle zoom/lens specifically designed with a mount for use with Sony Alpha digital SLR cameras with an APS-C size sensor. The slightly shorter zoom range of this lens over the popular and award winning 12-24mm lens makes it possible to maintain optical quality even at wide-open apertures. This lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 17-25mm in 35mm format.
As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Resistant) front element (only) a One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, that allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera to focus manually, and a 9-bladed aperture. This is an excellent lens for short closeup photography.
Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The ‘WR Coating’ adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.
Note! The lens is designed for digital cameras with APS-C sized CMOS and CCD sensors, not designed for cameras with Full Frame sensors.
Features
- WR Coating
- WR (Water Repellent) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.Note: This lens is NOT waterproof. The ‘WR Coating’ adds water-resistant protection to the front element only.
- One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
- The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
- 9-Blade Aperture
- The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.
- f/2.8 Aperture throughout Zoom Range
- Ultra Wide-Angle Zoom
- One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
- 9-Blade Aperture Diaphragm

Lensbaby
Lensbaby Muse Special Effects SLR Lens
The Lensbaby Muse Special Effects SLR Lens is a lens that will add a unique perspective to the world of SLR photography. The Lensbaby is a hybrid between a bellows camera and a tilt-shift camera. It will bring one area of a photo into sharp focus, surrounded by gradually increasing blur. The lens can be compressed, extended, and/or bent off-center in any direction for different results.
The Lensbaby Muse offers a radical departure from the precision of digital or even film photography. It allows for selective focusing with SLR cameras. Effects like blurring, glowing highlights, and subtle, prismatic color distortions can all be achieved without software manipulations.
The Muse features the Optic Swap System. Lensbaby has developed a line of different “optics” that can be interchanged with the Muse and Composer versions. This provides artists with an almost unlimited variety of looks and styles to capture their unique visions.
This version of the Muse comes supplied with the Double Glass Optic, which provides the sharpest focus in its range. It offers a tack sharp sweet spot, with minimal diffusion at all aperture settings. Also available optionally are the Plastic optic for an ultra-soft and ethereal look, the Single Glass for that vintage look, or the Pinhole/Zone Plate for softer, dreamier focus images that are equally sharp from edge to edge.
Features
- Sharp-Focus Areas with Gradual Blurring
- Hybrid – Bellows & Tilt-Shift Cameras
- Accepts Variety of Optics
- Multi-Coated Optical Glass
- Manual Focus
- Pre-installed Double Glass Optic
- No electronic communication is possible between the camera and the lens. All operation is strictly manual. Automatic light metering is possible by shooting in aperture priority mode with many digital and film SLR cameras.
- The lens aperture can be changed by inserting different size aperture discs.
- The lens tubing is the part of the Muse that allows you to control the effect that it gives. It can be compressed or extended by pulling or pushing the focusing collar at the end of the Lensbaby. This in turn controls what is in focus, with fully compressed focusing on infinity and full extended focusing about 1′ ahead. To focus on subjects that are between these distances, you have to partly compress the Muse.

It will bring one area of a photo into sharp focus, surrounded by gradually increasing blur. Effects like blurring, glowing highlights, and subtle, prismatic color distortions can all be achieved without software manipulations. The lens can be bent off-center in any direction for different results.
The Composer Pro is compatible with the Optic Swap System–a line of different “optics” that can be interchanged with the Muse and Composer versions. This provides artists with an almost unlimited variety of looks and styles to capture their unique visions.
The Composer Pro comes supplied with the Double Glass Optic, which provides the sharpest focus in its range. It offers a tack sharp sweet spot, with minimal diffusion at all aperture settings.
Features
- Enhanced Ball & Socket Selective Focus
- Interchangeable Optics System
- Multi-Coated Optical Glass

Lensbaby Control Freak SLR Lens
The Lensbaby Control Freak SLR Lens is a direct replacement for the 3G version, but now also incorporates the Optic Swap System. This special effects lens works on the same principal as the other Lensbaby versions, but also allows you to lock the lens into place once you have found your “sweet spot” of sharp focus and then to do fine focus adjustments. It is the ideal tool for photographers who require precise focusing, complete control, longer exposures, and repeatability.
When working with dynamic subject matter you can focus the Lensbaby Control Freak just like the other Original or Muse Lensbabies – by compressing and bending. For slower moving or static subject matter, you can lock the lens in place simply by pressing a button on the focusing collar. You can then fine focus using a traditional barrel focusing ring and fine tune the tilt to place the sweet spot exactly where you need it.
The Lensbaby is a hybrid between a bellows camera and a tilt-shift camera. The SLR lens can be compressed, extended, and/or bent off-center in any direction for different effect. It will add a unique perspective on the world that is a radical departure from the precision of digital or even film photography. It allows for selective focusing with SLR cameras. Effects like blurring, glowing highlights, and subtle, prismatic color distortions can all be achieved without software manipulations.
The Control Freak comes supplied with the Double Glass Optic, which provides the sharpest focus in its range.
Features
- Optic Swap System
- Lensbabies has developed a line of different “optics” that can be interchanged with the Control Freak, Muse, and Composer versions. This provides artists with an almost unlimited variety of looks and styles to capture their unique visions.
- Selective Focus Control
- The lens tubing is the part of the Lensbaby that allows you to control the effect that it gives. It can be compressed or extended by pulling or pushing the focusing collar at the end of the Lensbaby. This in turn controls what is in focus, with fully compressed focusing on infinity and full extended focusing about 1 foot ahead. To focus on subjects that are between these distances, you have to partly compress the Lensbaby.
- No electronic communication is possible between the camera and the lens. All operation is strictly manual. Automatic light metering is possible by shooting in aperture priority mode with almost all digital and film SLR camera bodies.
- The lens aperture can be changed by inserting different size aperture discs. The shielded magnetic aperture disc system makes it easier and faster to change apertures.

Schneider
PC-TS – Perspective Control through Tilt / Shift is Schneider’s new series of lenses for perspective control for digital single-lens reflex and Phase One medium format cameras.
The high-resolution optics are combined with a precise zero-play mechanism in a completely innovative lens housing ensuring long-term stability required for professional photography and the feel that view camera photographers have always valued in Schneider-Kreuznach lenses.
The exceptionally large image circles allow for full tilt and shift movements at any position in the lens rotation with no possibility of vignetting.
This series of lenses truly represents the state of the art in digital picture taking optics. Available as a 50mm f/2.8 Super Angulon and 90mm f/4.5 Makro Symmar for DSLR cameras and 120mm f/5.6 Apo Digitar for the Phase One camera.
Schneider PC TS Super Angulon 90mm f/4.5 Lens
The Schneider PC TS Super Angulon 90mm f/4.5 Lens (For Sony Alpha) gives you the same types of controls used by large format cameras to control perspective, but for your Sony Alpha camera. There’s both a parallel shift to reduce or eliminate converging lines or perspective distortion (“keystone correction”) and a swinging or tilting of the lens according to Scheimpflug’s rule to better utilize depth of field (DOF) without an increase in diffraction from stopping down the aperture further and reducing sharpness.
Parallel shift and lens swing or tilt can be carried out independently of one another in any desired direction (vertically, horizontally or obliquely) thanks to separate rotary mounts. This 90mm f/4.5 Super Angulon lens combines exceptional reproduction quality with a large 90mm image circle and excellent adjustability. The exceptionally large image circles allow for full tilt and shift movements at any position in the lens rotation with no possibility of vignetting.
