Samsung NX200 – Serious Competition for the Sony Nex System?

Samsung NX200

I’ve been reading up on the Samsung NX200 and the numbers are looking impressive I must admit. It’s got a huge 20.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor like the Sony Nex-7 and a nice metal chassis which should give a nice quality feel. Similar to the Sony Nex cameras,  it’s loaded with a feature set that even Sony must admit is impressive. The Nx200 retails for $900 with the 18-55mm kit lens and offers a very nice complement of high quality Fast glass to choose from. Did I say fast glass?? Here are a few: 60mm f/2.8 Macro ED OIS SSA Lens, 16mm f/2.4 pancake, 30mm f/2.0 pancake, 20mm f/2.8 pancake and the standard zooms as well as telephoto zooms. With that lens line-up alone this Samsung NX system is pretty much poking Sony directly in the face. Apparently the lenses are incredible sharp but I need to do more re-search to confirm this.

Samsung NX200 Key Features:

  • 20.3 Mp Image Capture
  • 18-55mm (3x) Zoom Lens
  • Bright 3″ AMOLED Display
  • Large (23.5 x 15.7mm) APS-C Image Sensor
  • Full HD 1080p30 Video Capture
  • Bundled Flash
  • 100 ms Auto Focus for Instant Capture
  • High Sensitivity 12,800 ISO
  • 7 fps Still Capture
  • Samsung’s i-Function Lens Control

Official Overview

The NX200 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black) from Samsung is a more compact, more affordable alternative to a DSLR camera that employs a mirror. Along with the sleek, slim design of the NX200, you get the creative opportunities that interchangeable lenses afford, plus mega-fine-detailed imagery: With a large (23.5 x 15.7mm), high-resolution APS-C image sensor, the NX200 captures photos at a vast 20.3 Megapixels. This model comes with a versatile 18-55mm zoom lens and a flash that attaches to the camera’s hot shoe.

The lens features Samsung’s i-Function technology, which puts a button on the lens that unlocks the manual adjustment of several settings. Choose among shutter speed, aperture, exposure value, white balance, and ISO, and then turn the ring on the lens to adjust your selected parameter. The slim-bodied NX200 camera has a mount that accepts any of Samsung’s NX-mount lenses, a growing family that already offers a wide range of choices.

The NX200’s video system is much-improved over that of its predecessor – the camera is capable of recording full HD 1920 x 1080 video at 30p. Set at 1280 x 720 resolution, the NX200 can even capture true slow-motion video.

  • The camera’s fast drive enables the capture of decisive moments at a speed of 7 shots per second
  • The APS-C sensor features super-sonic dust reduction to keep it free of dust motes
  • The bundled 18-55mm lens zooms 3x and offers an aperture range of f/3.5-5.6. The OIS II optical stabilization ameliorates camera shake for any image
  • The NX200’s bright 3″ AMOLED display features a VGA resolution (640 x 480) for 614k dots and a 100% field of view of what the sensor captures
  • Display options include Grid (four types), Histogram (for checking exposure levels), Icon On/Off, and a Distance Scale that’s selectable in feet or meters (or can be turned off)
  • The NX200 records movies as H.264 files at Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution at 30 progressive frames per second. The camera can also record 720p (1280 x 720) at 60 fps
  • “High-speed” (quick-motion) recording is possible at 5x, 10x, and 20x
  • Slow-motion recording is possible at 0.5x (1280, 640, and 320 horizontal-line modes only) as well as 0.25x (640 and 320 modes only)
  • For stereo audio capture, left and right microphones are integrated into the camera’s top – and separated by a distance that’s about equivalent to the diameter of the lens mount. There’s also a top-mounted speaker for playback
  • The bundled SEF-8A flash (GN8) mounts to the camera’s hot shoe. Flipping it up turns it on; flipping it back down turns it off again
  • One touch of the Fn button activates the overhauled user interface, a user-friendly graphic UI that gives the user direct control over all camera features
  • The NX200’s 20 Mp APS-C CMOS sensor offers almost 50% more pixels over its predecessor, to capture much finer detail in images
  • Smart Filter enables access to 10 filters for applying artistic effects in-camera
  • Express your current mood by applying one of 12 included Magic Frames to your photo
  • The NX200 can create 3D images (regular or panoramic) without a special lens
  • Focus Aid shows an on-screen reference for easier manual focusing
  • Framing mode auto-gains the brightness of the display in low-light scenes to keep the LCD bright

Highlighted Features

  • Expert Image Quality
  • Capture every moment in true-to-life quality. With the best-in-class resolution of the extra large 20.3 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, shots are rich, deep and exquisitely detailed. For active subjects, stills can be captured beautifully with 7fps Continuous Shot/100ms AF Speed. Then review your shot on the large 3.0” AMOLED display—made for sharper images and glare reduction.
  • Professional Just Got Easier
  • Compact, lightweight and easy to carry, the NX200 puts a professional camera in the palm of your hand. Form truly meets function through rubber-coated, ergonomic design, so it’s easy to get a grip on any shot. And the new Smart Panel interface keeps camera setup and navigation simple—so it’s quick and easy to shoot your best.
  • Beat the Action
  • Capture the perfect picture, no matter the speed of the subject. High Speed Capture can take sequential pictures at 7fps, so keeping up with the action also means unparalleled images. And the all-new autofocus algorithm makes it simple to get those rich, high-quality shots in an instant.
  • Perfect In Any Light
  • Take photos in any light at any speed—and get the shot. The NX200 can shoot high as 12800 ISO at normal settings, so even in low light, high-speed photos minimal noise and blurring. Or expand the range to maximize the potential of available light, for natural-looking images indoors or at night.
  • HD Video Recording
  • Produce high-definition movies like a pro: The NX200 can shoot smooth, dynamic video in 1080 30p Full HD. Take advantage of the wide zoom, 18-200 mm lens made for HD video, and when it’s showtime, the built-in HDMI interface connects directly to the big screen.
  • Genius in One Button
  • Create spectacular images on the fly. The updated i-Function 2.0 puts manual control of image capture settings right on the lens in a single button and the value ring. Intuitive icons streamline access to lens settings as well i-Zoom and i-Effect, so you always get the most from every shot.
  • Believe in Magic
  • Expand your creative palette with Magic Mode. Right from the display you can transform any shot with effects or express a mood. Choose from 10 Smart Filters and 12 Magic Frames to create poster-quality visuals with ease and verve. New effects include the warm ambiance of Soft Focus and the comic book style of Half-Tone Dot.
  • The Right View
  • Get the full picture with the thin and light 3.0” VGA AMOLED display. Darker blacks and more vibrant colors make it easy to view shots anywhere, even in direct sunlight. And images display almost as quickly as you take them, so you can do what you do best: Take the next shot.
  • Stunning 3D Images
  • Another NX200 innovation: Photograph vast, panoramic landscapes or stunning 3D images with one button on a single mode dial. Or apply both modes at once to create spectacular 3D panoramas. Then show your world the world with a simple HDMI connection to your 3D HDTV.
  • Processor of Perfection
  • Get the perfect shot from any circumstance in any light. The advanced DRIM DSP image processor powers stunning images and Full HD video. Supporting a sensitivity range of ISO100-12800, the processor instantly recognizes and reduces noise and distortion.
  • Advanced Comes Easy
  • Easily find and use advanced capabilities on the NX200. The user-friendly Smart Panel makes important controls accessible by hot key, and an intuitive graphical interface is easy to navigate so you can focus on the getting a great picture, not the settings.

Conclusion:

I would love to hear your thoughts on this direct Competition to the Nex!! Also, is anybody interested in a review of this system? I can get it and try it out if you want, but if none of you are interested I’d rather spend my time reviewing more Sony lenses or other stuff You want…  Please let me know!

My digested thoughts so far on the Samsung NX200:

After reading the features and specs, it looks very impressive and I really like the pancake lens line-up in particular. The sensor is massive so we should get a killer depth of filed, low noise up to ISO 3200 hopefully, and an Ultra-Compact DSLR qaulity camera body. The Nx200 offers an ISO of 12800 which if usable is awesome! The user interface is very well thought out and with the push of one button (Fn) you can see all the key settings on the screen. It offers multiple focus modes, metering modes, and all pretty much everything else the Sony Nex Cameras do. 7fps Burst capture is impressive. The NX200 also offers i-Function 2.0 which puts manual control of image capture settings right on the lens that has the feature also. I’m not sure if this will be useful or not, but it seems like it could be. The video is pretty good offering basically what we want for the average enthusiast in mp4 format which is nice. It’s not looking like this will offer True Full Manual video, but that remains to be seen 😉

  1. The glass lineup is impressive. But I’m not seeing much buzz on the internet for this product.

So my answer to your question is: not in the race.

  2. Brian

This looks like a great camera altho if its not one of the main brand of cameras its kinda hard to want to invest in it they might stop making stuff for it in a year or 2 if they dont sell many, Im not a big fan of Samsung, on there cell phones thye have very slow firmware updates and i have noticed are prone to breakage just haven’t had any luck with Samsung products overall. It does seem pretty nifty tho its good competition for the nex if the adverts were out there , altho this is the first time i heard of this. There are already good mirroless cameras, the problem i see with this competeing with the nex is one thing that alot of us nex owners hate about the Nex 3 nex 5 c3 and 5n is there is no viewfinder on them if samsung would have added that kinda like the nex7 i think it would be a better run up against the nex and the little viewfinder that connects to the nex 5n is just a big hassle in my opinion. It would be really nice to get a review of this tho later down the road if it seems to be going somewhere or selling lots of units. But i think 2012 will be the year for Nex lens that we have been waiting for hopefully!! And no tilt-able screen/articulating screen seems like kinda a bummer for the price.
