Review
I had a blast reviewing the Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye Lens on the Sony Nex-F3, and In this Sony E-Mount Lens Review I will go over Lens Sharpness, Distortion, Contrast, Design, and Build Quality.
The New Full Manual Rokinon 8mm fisheye lens is equivalent to 12mm with the Nex crop factor, and much smaller than the original E-Mount version I tested on the Sony Nex-7. You may remember it vaguely from a while back, because I got a pretty cool shot of a Covered Bridge!! Nex-7 and Original Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 Lens >> , Crop Factor Tutorial Over Here>>
In any event the New Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fish-Eye Lens is much smaller which is a much better match for the Sony Nex Cameras. The fast f/2.8 lens is really beefy and very well made. The engineers clearly took there time in developing this lens in my opinion, because the level of build quality is great. The first thing I thought when I took it out of the box was “this is heavy for such a small lens”. Here’s the Open Box Video if you want to check out my reaction first hand: Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye Lens Open Box Video >>

Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fisheye Lens – Build Quality
The Build Quality of the Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fish-Eye Lens is excellent! The Engineers clearly had very small tolerances for error in this project, because it’s rock solid and the Focus Ring is heavily dampened for super smooth and focus. This lens is full manually which really helps keep the costs down, but allows for huge upgrades to Optics and Build quality. Multi-coated lenses also minimize aberration and retain sharpness better. I said it was heavy for my first impression, but it’s actually only 7.65 oz (217 g). For the size it’s a bit hefty for sure!!
The 8mm Rokinon also has a built-in petal-type lens hood which helps prevent unwanted glare, but also prevents accidentally bumping of the lens itself on anything!! Believe me, you will bump the lens hood petals on something, because the minimum focus distance on this lens is only 1′. In other words you can get really cool shots from under flowers looking up, and things like that. The ultra wide 8mm focal length helps with this in particular.
The Aperture Ring has a nice subtle but effective notch that it stops at for each aperture. No good for video if you want to change the aperture while filming, but great for photography in my opinion!
The Finish is also really nice and happens to match the Silver Nex-F3 really well. The red ring also classes up the look of the lens a bit I think.

Here is an example of what the 8mm Fisheye effect actual does to a flat brick wall. Pretty amazing when you think about it!
Here’s a 100% Crop from the top right of the above brick wall photo.

Jay, thanks for the great review. I ordered this lens before seeing your review (and have yet to receive it) and now I’m really glad I ordered it. I am going to bookmark your page and use it the next time I’m shopping at Amazon, Adorama, or B&H.
Thanks for the comments Frank
I really appreciate your support as well!! How are you liking your Rokinon Lens??
Jay
Don’t know yet. Supposed to arrive on Friday Nov 2nd…so I’ll have a chance to check it out this weekend. I have been spoiled in the past by the Nikon 10.5mm (simply amazing on the D7000) and the Panasonic 7-14mm (equally as good as the Nikon and with more range), so my expectations are high. I also have the NEX 16mm with the wide converter so I’m hoping for more with this lens. Based on your samples, I won’t be disappointed. Planning on using it on the NEX-5n and maybe the NEX-6.
Thanks Frank!
Did you get yesterday?? I look forward to hearing and seeing your thoughts on the New Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 UMC fisheye lens.
Jay
I just got the Rokinon fisheye and it’s a blast. Check out my very first shots with it at http://jfiddler.smugmug.com/Events/Oakland-First-Friday-Feb-2013. I’d never owned a fisheye before, so it was a fun learning experience. I’m sure it’ll only get better from here.
Hi Jerry,
Thank you so much for sharing the link and the comments!! Your photos are awesome and great examples of what you can do with the Rokinon 8mm f/2.8 fishsyeye lens
Thanks again,
Jay
You’re welcome. Thanks for the kind remarks.
How does this lens compare to the Rokinon 8mm Fisheye f3.5 ? Is the same apart from the aperture.
thx! Great work on the reviews!
Great question Luuk, and here is the link to the other Rokinon lens review: http://sonyalphalab.com/2012/02/rokinon-e-mount-8mm-f3-5-fisheye-review-sample-photos-and-100-crops/
Both lenses perform about the same optically from what I can tell. The f/2.8 is a much smaller form factor however. Both lenses are really well made, but the newer version is a bit more refined.
