Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens – Lab Testing with Sony A7R IV

In this Lab Testing article I will show you how the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens performs in the lab while mounted to the 61MP Sony A7R IV.

In the full scene tests, you can clearly see just how sharp this lens is at all aperture ranges corner to corner. I was extremely impressed to say the least.

I also did some minimum focus distance testing, but it was very hard to nail the focus on the quarter as you will see in the images. My focus was a tiny bit off, but the background bokeh rendering is really what I wanted you to see more than anything with that test. For more accurate sharpness testing, please refer to the full scene images!!

Full Scene Lab Testing – Sharpness/ Aperture Run w/ 100% Crops

As you will see with the 100% Crops, the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens performs exceptionally well in my opinion. Be sure to click on the photos for a larger view and detailed inspection.

MFD = Minimum Focus Distance Test

As I said above, I missed the focus on the quarter by a tiny bit so it’s not as sharp as it could be due to my human error. However the sharpness tests above are dead accurate, so please refer to those images for sharpness testing and use these images to get an idea of minimum focus distance magnification and background bokeh ball rendering….

Bonus Photo

I also took a quick test shot of Layla just to see both the resolving power of the A7R IV, and also the incredible background separation and sharpness of the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens when shooting wide open at f/1.4.

Closing Remarks

Well, I can tell you for sure the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens holds up big time in the lab testing when using the super high resolution Sony A7R IV. The sharpness, clarity, contrast, and control of fringing are all exceptionally good in my opinion, and you can easily see that for yourself when viewing the 100% Crops. The Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens really holds its own in the Lab and stands up to the hype surrounding it.

The Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG Lens is really a beast, because it’s large and heavy. However, you do get something for that size and weight! This lens is an awesome portrait lens option and I plan on getting some killer portraits of my kids in the very near future, so please stay tuned!
