New Sony Gear to Review?? Latest Sony Rumors Round-up!

Hi everybody and thank you so much for checking in and your patience as I re-built the forum for at least the past two weeks. It’s pretty much done and now it’s time to review some new camera gear! Times are changing so fast these days, so I wanted to get an update on user feedback. What would you like me to review? In addition to that, I wanted to go over the latest Sony Rumors floating around the web. So much new gear coming

What to Review??

Clearly we have some new Sony gear coming out soon, but it will probably be some time before I can get my hands on that.

That leaves us with the New QX10 and QX100 lens cameras?

The Sony Nex-5T and 24mm f/1.8 Zeiss?

It’s basically identical to the Nex-5R plus the NFC technology. I have not officially reviewed the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 lens, so I could get the Nex-5T and that? I would also love to get the New e-mount Zeiss 16-70mm f/4 lens, but it’s rarely in stock.

We also have the Pro full frame SLT-A99 I could review with the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Lens?

What about the new e-mount A3000?

Please let me know in the comments area below! I greatly appreciate the feedback and sorry the poll didn’t work 😉

Sony Rumors Round-Up

I always watch the the web for Sony rumors and know-body does it better than Andrea over at SonyAlphaRumors. They are often not correct though, as is the nature of the “rumor”. So, I wanted to clarify what we know is actually coming out in a few days.

New Sony Full Frame E-Mount Cameras

A7 and A7r

Looks like the New Full frame E-Mount mirrorless cameras will be called the A7 and the A7r. They will both have next generation full frame Sony sensors that are able to deal with the 18mm flange to sensor distance. A curved sensor?? One is optimized for high res (36mp) landscape photography and No low-pass anti-aliasing filter, or Hybrid AF technology? Not sure if this is true, but if it’s meant for landscapes and it makes the sensor much cheaper and effective, why not?  The other full frame sensor is lower resolution (24mp), but has the fast Hybrid AF and low-pass anti-aliasing filter for better video.

 New Full frame E-Mount lenses??

Zeiss FE 24-70mm f/4.0 OSS (likely on market in early 2014)
Sony G 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 (don’t know if it’s OSS)
Zeiss FE 35mm f/2.8 (with that lens on the A7/A7R) the camera-lens size is the same of the RX1/R)
Zeiss FE 55mm f/1.8
Zeiss FE 70-200mm f/4.0 OSS (likely on market in early 2014)

That is about it from what I’ve and we should see more on October 16 at 5-6am London time when the new gear is official announced 🙂

Closing Remarks

Thanks again for stopping by and I look forward to the poll results and your comments and/ or questions below 😉

Just wanted to comment on the A7 A7r – somewhat exiting to know that Sony has a small mirror less body camera that has interchangeable lenses – Sony has been leading the way in sensor technology like the 1 inch sensor in the RX100 M2 and others ( ExmorR ) –
When the NEX came out with APS-C size sensors the price was and is still around $1000 and less which makes them affordable for so many. NEX was amazing with it’s APS-C size sensor as it was by far the largest sensor we had seen in a small form factor digital camera.
It it seems to me that Sony now is focusing on the Pro’s with the A7 as it will be quite expensive or over $2000 for the A7 and around $3000 for the A7r – I am not so sure that there will be a huge number of Pro’s that will sell their current gear and switch over to A7r – granted that some will due to weight advantages –
I think there is a larger market in the semi Pro users and advanced hobbyist that currently are now buying the M43 system as well as Fuji X system and of course the NEX7 and NEX6.
I personally have really focused on the M43 system as it offers so many lenses and really good once like the Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8 and 35-100mm F2.8 for example –
I do own the NEX7 and 5n (Rx100 and HX50v as well) – but both frustrate me to no end – neither has a mode dial and so often one has to dive deep into the menu system to make a common adjustment.
Granted that now the NEX6 has a mode dial – but the menu system remains the same and the other fact is that there are hardly any Fn buttons or C1 C2 etc options on the mode dial –
There is no Touch To Focus and Shoot on any of the NEX cameras – such a handy feature as it is time consuming to be using up/down to move the focus point – one could loose the picture –
    Using my Panasonic GX7 and OMD-5 is a joy – ( GX7 even more so with 9Fn buttons and C1 C2 C3 C3-1 C3-2 C3-3 custom settings and a much nicer menu system compared to NEX )

I do love the grip and size on the NEX – I would rather see a slightly larger body with more Fn button and control wheels etc ) – the NEX body is un-nessasary small as the lenses are quite big anyway so NEX could be a tad larger to fit more manual controls –

The real frustrating thing with the NEX is that like the NEX7/6 they have real nice sensors so the IQ is very nice and low light performance is quite good.

So my hope was that Sony would improve the NEX7 – with a slightly larger body – more Fn and control wheels and a real mode dial with Custom settings and would add Touch To Focus and Shoot – to compete with the OMD-5 GX7 and OMD-M1 and the upcoming Fuji XE2 and XPro2 –
Seems Sony is just leaving the NEX line for less advanced users like with the NEX5r/t with hardly any manual controls on the body assuming that the shooter will be mostly in the Green auto mode and then the big gap to the Pro A7 –
At this point it seems that there will be no updates for the NEX7 –
I suppose there will be updates to the NEX6 – like NEX6t with NFC etc.
    but no real change

I really was hoping to see a real update to the NEX7 – in the price range of $1000-$1400
I love Sony stuff but sometime they really disappoint like with not providing a cheaper viewfinder – I guess those who can shell out for the RX1 don’t mind paying $450 for a viewfinder but Sony is now putting hot shoe on the RX100 M2 for example – why ?? not many will spring for that –
I sure hope Sony will compete with the GX7 and OMD-5 OMD-M1 as far as manual controls and menu system

I think the thing to keep in mind with the NEX system is that it has only been around for about 3 years. Originally it was conceived as a way to get point and shoot user to upgrade to something that would not be intimidating hence the fewer controls.

But yes, I do agree that Sony has to work on the customization aspect of their cameras. I would like to see User modes like many other cameras have on the dial for quick settings. The other thing they should do is the ability to adjust ISO with once of the dials on 2 dial cameras (5T/6). I think the don’t because they want to be able to sell the higher spec camera (NEX 7).

As seen with the addition of the A3000, Sony is starting to make different styles and hopefully will round out their mid range offerings over the next year. Personally I would like a a NEX 6 like camera with 2 useful control dials (1 for aperture/shutter, one for EC), better continuous autofocus, and maybe an extra button or 2 for programmable functions. One thing I wish their was a way to do was map peaking to a FN button, basically like a toggle or something or even in Fn menu. I find it distracting to always have it on when framing but leave it on most of the time. I only usually use it with manual lenses. Maybe a way to turn it off when using DMF but have on with manual focus. Many of these things are more on the software size of things and would not require a massive redesign of the camera.

Thanks for the comments Habsfan and you made some really excellent points. The focus peaking would be nice on a toggle and more customization is a must! It needs the full pro menu in my opinion.

        Thanks again,
        Jay

Great points as always John and thank you very much for taking the time to share your well laid out thoughts on the matter 🙂

Certainly does appear to be a huge Gap? Perhaps they do have another camera coming out? It’s happened before and this is always possible.

The Nex-6 needs a major upgrade to fill the void?

      Request to Sony:

We need a updated Nex-6 with everything we just talked about for the semi-pro/ enthusiast. The full frame E-mount will be here, so why not allow the new Nex-6r take over for the Nex-7? Give it all the pro features, extra buttons, and and a APS-C next gen hybrid medium res sensor. Fully articulating high res touch screen and next gen EVF.

      Always a pleasure John,
      Jay
