Thread: Image Quality Issues

    Image Quality Issues

I have been having this problem for awhile. I took some interior shots & noticed pixel issues around corners & edges of furniture. I use Lightroom 5 for post. No matter what settings I choose in the export module I get this, and its not due to over sharpening, thought I had that problem & the sharpening is minimal. (see attched photo) I enlarged it so you can see it better. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.....jp

I uploaded the file 2x's but didn't see it, so I attached a link in case it did. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_l...ew?usp=sharing

I shoot with a Sony A7II, 24MP, Vario-Tessar FE 4/16-35 ZA OSS. These were Jpg's not RAW, the problem occurs upon export from Lightroom 5(LR). When photos are viewed before processing they aren't there only upon export. I shoot the largest files possible, 24M, 6000x4000, re-size for web purposes at 1200 Long 80% resolution & 350dpi, & sharpen as little as possible in LR & in export module to avoid over sharpening problems. Beats the heck out of me???

Something is obviously wrong with lightroom, as no way that should happen. I don't shoot raw much, when I do I always use lightroom and have never had a issue like that.

Some setting is wrong or the program is corrupt or something. I wish I was local to you, I would show up with my laptop and load one of your files and see what my lightroom does to it.

Maybe try Adobe Camera Raw and see if you have the same issue.

Looks like a shadow from the flash you were using?

Thanks for the advice, this really getting frustrating, I'm tired of dealing with this. On another note do you have any idea why my Lightroom 5 (latest update is current) not giving me all camera profiles & lens corrections? I know at first they were limited inside the drop down menus in the develop module but as the updates became available they would load. For Sony it has only one lens correction profile & its not even mine (see attached) & I know Adobe has added tons but why hasn't mine updated? Any thoughts.....jp

I don't see how that's possible, it doesn't show up in the Jpg image in the folder before importing to LR. Its everywhere along edges, someone elses thoughts were compression problems. Good luck trying to contact anyone at Adobe, can't talk to anyone its all messages boards & forums. The forums are great but sometimes you just need to speak on the phone with a specialist, not having much luck. Thinking about purchasing LR6 & just bagging this problem. At least it would be the most current. ....jp

This looks SOOOO much like Facebooks compression algorithm. First FB sharpens the edges then compresses the picture. Your sample looks very much like that. I would recommend using "Best" quality when outputting the image. JPEGs from the camera are already compressed and sharpened so make sure you output quality in LR is 100% or no compression. also make sure "edge sharpening" is off.
    some helpful info here.

A person from another forum helped me trouble shoot what I was doing incorrectly. I would sharpened the photo (Jpg 6000x4000) correctly in the develop module but upon exporting I set quality between 70-80%, set Screen Sharpening to Standard, then reduced file size to 1200 Long Side for upload purposes to a website, thus having this problem. But if I set Quality to 100%, Long Side 1200, & No Screen Sharpening the photo looks just fine. Seems I may have over sharpened then when reduced really made it show up along edges. Wherever the image color meets another image color it produced this problem. I may still be able to set the screen sharpening to Standard & it will be ok but haven't tried it yet. Just happy to finally have a solution. Thanks for your insights....jp

Yeah you pretty much said exactly what I just found out. Wherever the image color meets another image color it produced this problem. I may still be able to set the screen sharpening to Standard & it will be ok but haven't tried it yet. Just happy to finally have a solution. When you say "edge sharpening " Off you are referring to Screen Sharpening(OFF) in the export module correct?.....jp

I did not realize the over sharpening line is what you were talking about the whole time! I thought it was the black shadow created by the flash That white line is clearly caused by over sharpening, sorry I miss read your original problem.

    Glad you got it resolved!

reducing an image, in itself kinda has the effect of sharpening

I recognized your name but couldn't place it, then it hit me that I've watched a number of your LR videos on youtube, very informative & helpful thanks for posting those, very easy to follow. Maybe you can answer another question I have concerning LR5. I shoot with a Sony A7II 24MP. I purchased LR5 shortly after its release. In the develop module there are camera profiles & lens correction profiles for the camera you select. There have been many cameras & lens profiles added since LR5 hit the market. I always do the updates & at present have the current version. I've seen cameras & lens added for Apple, DJI, Sigma, Nikon, Canon, etc...However for Sony there is only one in my LR, Sony DT 18-200mm f3.5-6.3, in fact I don't even own this lens. I know there are numerous profiles that Adobe has created that I've seen on their website but why doesn't it populate over to my files when LR is up to date with the latest version?.....jp

I'm not sure why Lightroom is not updating the lens profiles, sorry. I have several in my Lightroom 5, but not the new FE lenses which I want. I have been considering upgrading to Lightroom 6 because of this myself. Do you shoot raw or jpeg?

I shoot both RAW & JPG, when I do my real estate photos I like to have RAW in case I need more control over the image. I just learned that the lens profiles for Sony are in LR but only available in RAW not JPG. As for the newest ones I don't know what to tell you. I was on another forum wondering how I can get a profile for my new drone, it wasn't in my LR either. I had someone tell me to download Adobe DNG Converter, the files in that program have all the newest profiles, so I did & low & behold there was my drone profile for RAW & JPG. I copied & pasted it into LR, now I got it. Sony's release of those new FE's lens are so new it might take some time for them to show up. They'll show up eventually in LR6 but I wonder if they'll make them available to LR5? I think Adobe wants everyone to move towards the cloud but I have my reservations. If you have a reliable broadband service provider (Yeah Right!) it might do ok, but I have DSL. My wife & I work at home a lot & sometimes its tough if one of us is using to much bandwidth it gets slow. I can't see making adjustments & dealing with lag time. Now a few cities have Google fiber right to the house, that would be awesome, but that's years away for the rest of us. Same goes for the phone carriers. Maybe in my kids lifetime......jp
