SAL Photography Challenge #8 - Manual Mode Only

Ok, so it was windy today, but I set up the tripod and looked for something that did not move (or move a lot) to shoot.

and decided for the birdhouse at the back of the grandparents garden
Full manual (apart from ISO which I forgot to take off auto, sorry)

I used the Minolta AF 75-300 and the SEL55210, I took a shot at 300mm and then at about 210mm on the Minolta, and at 210 on the SEL55210.
The EXIF data says I got it exactly at 210, however the FOV does not look the same. Maybe the tripod was moved slightly whilst I went away to change lenses or is there a FOV difference between a Full Frame lens and an APS-C lens on an APS-C camera at the same focal length?

Jtimmer, really like your butterfly shots.

Mike, great sense of motion in your creek shots. Something I need to try to play with more in water shots.

Jay, like those macro shots - like the one with the ant on the wood and that lens really worked well with the portrait.

Stef, like the shot looking toward the little garden through the arch - nice light.

Tikcus, interesting comparisons. Think that the sony lens is producing more contrast (though doesn't seem like there are exact settings to compare) & my take with zooms is based on the different construction and using manual settings to zoom, you never get exact apples to apples focal lengths. What surprised me was similarity in color rendering, as I generally think I can detect different lens brands causing subtle variations in color.

Lu, gotta say I'm enjoying your auto shots, really like the '48 chevy a lot - keep them coming.

Lucille, naturally, dig your auto shots as well - keep the competition going! I really love your shots of old churches and buildings - your style stands out.

Dragion, great macro/close ups of the flowers. Like what you're doing with that sigma 90mm.

Some of my manual shots. All manual settings with old manual lens. Been raining a lot here, so started with my own experiment on shooting a coin to pass the time. Don't have a macro lens, but the zoom @80mm does pick up a fair amount of detail - not comparable to a macro, but with some cropping, thought it was ok. Just put it against a sheet of white paper, folded at a 90 degree angle under a table lamp (so white balance could use some correction).

Then a shot of what I believe is called a firebush. We have several shoots coming over from the neighbors yard. this with same lens at 75mm, and iso 200, but back to f/5.6, 1/500 sec.

Did a 'quickie' processing for this one.
Shot this three shot series, mergered it with PhotoMatix, and then a quick Litghtroom 4.4....did I mention this was a 'quickie'?

The Flume, a big attraction in the state of New Hampshire. I love going to see this everytime I get into the New England area. It is almost impossible to get any frames without 'people', so you pretty much get what you get, and then live with it.



By the way, I shot these three photo's off a Manfrotto monopod. And there was hardly any alignment issues(I got lucky there)!

@ Willie : the "macro" coin shot is not bad at all for a zoom lens. The flower with water drops is also very nice; lovely colors and bokeh on that vintage pentax optics.

@ Scott : really cool picture and processing. At first I did not appreciate the size of the subject until I saw the person and the trail. That place looks straight out of a jungle! A place to put on the visit list...

I took a variety of manual shots over the last few days. A selection is displayed at my Flickr location, including other birds at golden hour from my recent vacation and several vegetation close ups.

In particular, I dusted off the Minolta Rokkor-X 50mm/1.4 MD for some evening and night shots. I went back to the local park and fountain. It's pretty amazing what can be done with fast optics, shooting hand-held and high-speed at night for example without killing the ISO, such as:

Taken with an A6000 and vintage 50mm @ f/1.4, 1/640 and ISO 3200.

I was also able to capture the street glow during rain at 5 a.m. with reasonable details.

Finally, after the rain, I went to my favorite local forest with a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 vintage macro lens this time. The light was a bit gloomy and the wind made the following image hard to pull in. I worked at f/8 in order to get a reasonable focus DOF and 1/400 to freeze movement (both my stance and the subject). This required ISO 3200 which is pretty acceptable on the A6000. This is one case where I would have liked to try the new FE 90mm G macro lens auto-focus and OSS...

Good job with the raindrops on the Frangipani, Willie. But, I like the firebush best.

That flume place looks really impressive, Scott. I'll have to put that on my places to go list as well.

I particularly like that street glow shot, Stef. It is really cool how you caught the rain by the light glow and the reflection of the light in the wet street, set off by the dark trees and blue sky.

Stef, Great night shots - the rain in streetlight came out very well, surprised you could get that sharp a shot for handheld @ 1/40 w/out IS. Also like the water universe macro. Love droplets with reflections and refracted light - truly a universe there.

I thought this month would free up time for me, but that hasn't been the case. I've traveled and am still learning the ropes at work, so photography has suffered. My flickr acct hasn't seen much lately, either. I used to post a shot every day for years and years. Sigh.

I just scanned through the thread. The back and forth banter cracked me up. It really infuses something extra in this month's series. And the photos here are great (Lucille's Tome Hill is my favorite, I think). I particularly like seeing some macro shots and the even the new FE 90 (sharpest lens ever tested at Dx0Mark - at least AF). Cool it's only for our cameras.

JMHO, the one you have labeled 'Sony SEL55210 @ 210mm (315) F/13, Exposure time, 1/40, ISO-1600' is the most pleasing. But, why such a high (same, discounting the presumable 160 typo) ISO on all?
