Fast Primes On the Sony A7 – Sample Photos – EF 135mm f/2 and MC 50mm f/1.4 lenses

In this post I’m going to show you a few sample photos taken with the Sony A7 and the Canon EF 135mm f/2 L lens, and Minolta MC Rokkor-X 50mm f/1.4 lens.

I used the Metabones III lens adapter for the Canon EF lens and it worked pretty good although struggled with a few extremely shallow depth of field focus points. I helped it with manual focus and then it locked on no problem. This might be the best way to go when shooting wide open with such fast apertures, as it’s the hardest conditions possible for the camera to focus under. The high contrast out of focus backgrounds get focus on often or the camera for focus through what you’re trying to focus on like it never saw it.
I used my RainbowImaging lens adapter for the Minolta lens and it worked really well as expected. I did have an issue with the A7 though not allowing me to magnify zoom with the fully passive lens and lens adapter combo. The camera allowed me to shoot and everything else, so it’s probably an option in menu I missed.  It looks to be not available for some reason, but as I said I will get to the bottom of this one way or another.

The depth of field is so incredible narrow with this combo. I was about 6 meet or so from this sign when I took the frame for reference.

This lens is much wider than the 135mm and it feels like you are far from things when first switching to it. The focus was pretty easy with the Minolta lens even without the magnify zoom, because the focus peaking was clearly visible and can be trusted. You can see the peaking dots walk through the scene as you turn the focus ring to find the best spot. The vignette on the full frame A7 is much more pronounced than on the smaller sensor Nex-6. It looks like I applied a Vignette in Lightroom on these images, but I did not.

Closing Remarks:

That is it for now, but please feel free to comment and I will test these in the Lab if you are curious on how they perform 😉 I also tested the Sony A7 VS Nex-6 with the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L Lens in the Lab and I used 50mm for the full frame A7 and 32mm for the APS-C Nex-6, so the compositions were as close as possible. I still need to go through all the images when I get some time, so please check back tomorrow or the next day for more…
Thanks again for checking in and I’ll catch up with you all later,
Jay
