Sony Alpha and Nex Camera Firmware Update

Huge New Firmware Updates for Sony Alpha and Nex Cameras including the SLT-A77, SLT-A65, SLT- A57, SLT-A37, Nex-6, Nex-6, Nex-5r, Nex-5n, and Nex-f3!!

In this article I’m going to give you all the direct links to the latest Sony Alpha and Nex camera firmware updates!

In summary, the Full Frame SLT-A99 gets a major long overdue Dual AF lens support package update. The Sony Alpha SLT-A77, SLT-A65, SLT-A57, and SLT-A37 get more automatic lens compensation support. For the Sony Nex cameras we have the Nex-7 and Nex-F3 getting lens support for the 16-50mm power zoom lens. The newer Nex-6 and Nex-5r get the more advanced Hybrid AF lens support,

It’s nice to see Sony stepping up their game on the firmware updates front! Re-lease times could always be faster, but it seams to me Sony has gotten better in my opinion over the past year or so with this issue. I was especially happy to see the new Nex Lenses included that I’m currently reviewing in my Nex-5r Rolling Review (Click Here >>) I will be updating my Nex-6 camera and the Nex-5r ASAP.

Just ask in the comments if you would like a tutorial on how to update the firmware on a Mac. I don’t have PC’s anymore ;)

I just updated the Sony Nex-5r and the AF performance on the SEL35f18 is drastically improved!!

    Now for my Nex-6 ;)

      Hi Jay,

I just upgrade my Sony Nex 5R with latest firmware. But unfortunatly, there is no lens Firmware update for the SEL 18200LE. So for the moment, it is impossible to have PDAF with this lens and the NEX 5R or NEX 6.

Do you have some news about that ?

      • Jay

        Hello Choubl79,

The new firmware is supposed to support that lens I thought, but then it has that little note about updating the lens itself? Weird. I don’t see any update for that lens, so I’m really not 100% sure.

I will do some investigating and thanks for mentioning this as I don’t have that lens currently and would not have known otherwise ;)

        Best,
        Jay

Caution Nex Firmware Update!! Courtesy of Mike Hendren:

    “*Sony Firmware Update UPDATE!
Be VERY VERY CAREFUL! I just killed my NEX-6!
Whatever you do, at the end of the process, DO NOT disconnect your camera or turn it off while the screen is still blank!!!!*

Please – Sony – let me write your update instructions because your’s SUCK!

When I discover how to recover my camera from this debacle, I’ll let you know. So far, it doesn’t look promising. :-(
    * RECOVERY – see the first two comments, below. *

The good news is, I did it right with my NEX-5R and also now have PDAF on the 30mm macro, the 50mm f/1.8, and the 35mm f/1.8! Yay! :-)”?

Aw… no updates for the C3… hehe

Has anyone updated their NEX-6 to firmware 1.0.1 successfully? Until I own one of these lenses, is there any benefit to the update?

For the lens firmware update, I only see downloads for SEL30M35 and SEL50F18. Is the SEL35F18 update included in the NEX-6 1.0.1 download?

    Thanks!

    • MT

I installed the Sony Firmware version 1.01 (Update_NEX6V101.exe) on my Nex6 yesterday following the instructions online (which overlap the onscreen computer instructions). Slightly confusing, but it worked with the SEL35f1.8 attached while installing the upgrade to the body. Now the SEL35f1.8 lens has phase detection. The upgrade exe file is 182 MB and took awhile to install. It makes me wonder if there are other undocumented improvements in the upgrade. Does anybody know???

    • Jay

I just updated my Nex-6 with no issues at all. Smooth sailing ;) All the lens data is in the update except for the noted lenses which you will have to download separately I believe.

  5. Hi Jay

I am a new user and own a Nex-6. I also own 2 additional lenses Zeiss 24mm 1.8 and 55-200 sony . Could you comment and show me how to update the firmwares actually avalable for the Nex-6 on a Mac..
I also own lenses for myCanon 60D ( a Canon 24/70mm 2.8F L, a canon 100mm 2.8 and Tokina 11/16mm 2.8) I read in on of you review that there are adaptors that will give us the possibility to use these lens completely …. adjust F etc……..
Excuse my english I am frech and have a bit of diffiiculty writting in Englih

    Thanks!

    Paul

    • Jay

      Hi Paul,

For the Mac you just download the dmg image file from the links above. It’s pretty large and may take some time. Once it completes, luanch the dmg package by double clicking on it. Do not connect the camera yet!!

You then need to have a mostly charged battery in your camera and the installer will tell you to connect it to the mac. Just connect itwith the USB cable turn the camera on and it should say Mass Storage on the screen.

Click next in the installer and it will check your camera for the current version, and you will need to press the ok button on the camera. You will then be prompted to actually run the update. Click run!!

It takes a while to update so be patient. The installer will tell you when it’s done and you can close the program. Be sure to disconnect the camera properly from the Mac if you had a memory card in it.

That is it :) You can then go in the menu and check the versions and see it’s updated to the 1.01.

I hope this makes sense and gets you through ok!!

      Best,
      Jay

I just updated to V 1.01 on my NEX-6 and I haven’t noticed a significant improvement with the SEL18200. It might be a bit faster or it could just be in my head; I can’t be sure. It should be noted though that the lens is already on the V 2.00 firmware and I did notice a drastic improvement after updating the lens about a week ago.
To be completely honest, I’m a little disappointed that this update was so minor (I mean it’s a 0.01 step up…didn’t even deserve a 0.1!). I hope this means that the NEX-6 is pretty good as is rather than it being put on the back burner in light of the NEX-5R.

    • Jay

      Hi Aric,

Thanks for the comments and sharing your experience ;) I’m not 100% sure why Sony releases the firmware updates the way they do. It seems to me all the lens info should be on the camera. I guess it’s to much information so the lenses themselves also need to be updated? I need to invest some time and look into this further but it’s hard when the main site is Japan. I think Sony must lose something in the translation when making the American website/ instructions.

The Nex-6 is awesome out of the box feature wise! I’m happy with mine and the way Sony seems to keep the cameras separated by feature set is going to continue. For example, I would not mind the pro menu of the Nex-7 and more custom button options for the Nex-6, but Sony does not go for that. You need to get the Pro Nex-7 model for those options ;) Smart marketing/ engineering by Sony and I will most likely go for the Pro Full Frame Nex camera when it finally comes out!!

I wouldn’t worry about the Nex-5r getting all the hype. It’s a great camera for sure, but not comparable to the Nex-6 really as far as build quality and features with the flash ect..

      Have a great day,
      Jay

Be very wary about upgrading the Nex F3. I did mine and I now have a problems with the camera crashing. It is fairly new so I returned it to the shop who sent it to Sony for repairs. The shop told me they have seen a few brought back with problems since the firmware was upgraded – only the F3 model seems to be affected. Sony told the shop there is a ‘known problem’ with the F3 and the firmware .

  8. julius

I tried to update my slt A65 from 1.03 to 1.05 but somehow along the run process it always make an error. I already follow all the procedure given, but it always showing error after quite some time of updating.

    Any recommendation?? thankz

    • Jay

I would call Sony Julius ;) There are a lot of variables and they are trained to walk you through it!

      Best,
      Jay

      • julius

I saw the link for the update to 1.07 and directly I downloaded it. Well it works with no fuzz. Thanks!

      • Jay

Yeah, it should. I had no problem at all. Just make sure you do not unplug the camera until it’s done updating! I recommend reading over the procedure again one more time quickly as well ;)

        Jay

  9. Stan

    Hi Jay
