Sony A57 12fps Feature Tested using New Firmware!! Sample Pics w/ 100% Crops!!

120427_044

I did a lot of shooting this weekend with the Sony A57 and 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss lens using the New Ver 1.02 Firmware, and was able to test out the incredible 12fps feature!! Here is what Sony officially claims the feature can do:

“By capturing the center 2/3 of the image sensor (8.4MP), Tele-zoom high speed shooting brings the action closer with a 1.4x effective increase of focal length. Shoot up to an incredible 12 frames per second with continuous auto focus and auto exposure to capture the decisive moment. “

To test this feature out I wanted a subject that was moving away from me or towards me, and it just so happen that Layla and Chloe were both running on the deck in front of me on Saturday.

12fps Feature

Check out this first burst of images I took of Layla running towards me.

Also be sure to Click on the photos for the large crisp version!!

100% Crops so you can see for yourself the focus is accurate on almost all of them.

Here’s another Burst of images, but this time it’s a harder target, Cloe running towards me with here toy!!

Buffer Size Testing

Per the comments below we had a request to test the buffer size, and here are the results:

Ok I tested the buffer size and here is what I got using my Sandisk 8gb 30mb/s Extreme HD video Memory card.

12fps mode only allows jpeg medium size so I got about 22-23 shots before the buffer filled up,then it went about 1-3 shots every second or so.

10fps mode I was able to shoot raw and I got 18 shots before the buffer filled up,then it was about 1 shot a second.
10fps mode Jpeg mode large I got 20 shots before the buffer filed up, then it was about 1-3 shots per second
10fps mode Jpeg mode medium I got 22 shots before the buffer filed up, then it was about 1-3 shots per second

Not to bad in my opinion, and it would be even better with a faster memory card!!

Here’s a shot of Cloe in the Direct Sun as she was sitting on my Dad’s lap.

Closing Remarks:

I am absolutely blown away by the 12fps Mode hit rate being pretty much 100% for my three test bursts above. I still need to test this on something a bit faster like my quad or something, but still Layla and Cloe were running at me, and the camera was at an aperture of f/3.5 which creates a really narrow depth of field. The Sony was able to nail the focus shot after shot better than my Canon 5D Mark II ever has. Granted that is not a sports camera, but the focus is incredible good so it’s worth noting the comparison in my opinion. Way to go Sony!!

If your in the Market for a new Camera I highly recommend checking out the Sony A57!! Sony really hit it out of the park with this camera and the more I use it, the more it impresses me.

One other note about the EVF (electronic view finder) it is not as good as the OLED in the A77, but it’s definitely better than the other one that was in the A55. It’s totally usable and does the job perfectly for my purposes.

Stay tuned for some HD Video and some more sample pics using the Sony A57 and 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Lens!!

Hey what is the buffer size of A57? Max shots in a continuous burst?

    • Jay

      Hello KSR,

It depends on the mode your shooting raw vs jpeg, and also what kind of memory card your using. The faster the better. I’ll do a test today and let you know exactly what I get and what kind of card I’m using!!

      Best,
      Jay

The quality of the images looks spectacular! I visit your site daily and I enjoy reading all of your reviews. Im pretty new to the world of photography and I own a Nex5n. Do you think i can benefit great shots like yours if i bought a Carl Zeiss e-mount lens for my Nex5n? As far as i know, there is only the ’24mm f/1.8 Wide-Angle Prime Lens’ that Carl Zeiss has to offer.

Let me know what you think, and keep up the awesome work Jay!

      Alan,

Thanks, I really appreciate the sediments ;) As far as the 24mm Carl Zeiss lens goes, it depends on a few factors.

Optical quality is pretty similar from the image sample perspective, but that lens is pretty expensive for just the 24mm in my opinion. I Personally would opt for the 50mm f/1.8 OSS instead, although not even close in focal length. I personally don’t find the 24mm focal length that useful for my style of shooting on a crop factor sensor like the Nex cameras.

Quality wise though if you like that focal length, you can’t go wrong with the 24mm Zeiss

      Hope that helps!!

      Best,
      Jay

Hi, I trying to decide between the A580 vs the A57, which one would you recommend? the only use for the near future would be to photograph my newborn, indoors under available home lighting.

    Thanks,

    • Jay

      Hello May,

You have a pretty tuff decision to make I gatta tell ya!! You really cannot go wrong with either camera as you can probably tell. The benefits of the A57 over the A580 as far as image quality is concerned, is minor in my opinion. As far as features and technology are concerned the A57 is way more advanced, especially in the video department. The A57 also has the Superior + Auto Mode which is incredible good for beginners or if your just in a rush and don’t have time to set the camera up. The Electronic viewfinder is the only thing you might find a little week if your used to an optical viewfinder. The A57′s is really good, but not as good as the A77 OLED. It’s totally usable though and works great, but it’s certainly different than the Optical Viewfinder using the “old School” Mirror like the A580.

If it were up to me I would be totally happy with either camera for what your planning on doing. The Features are really were the money is going as Image quality is extremely close. The A57 would be my choice if I had the money, but a killer deal on a A580 would be hard to pass up!!

I hope that helps you a little bit at least,
      Jay

    4 yours in 3 statements.

In order to maintain a level of professionalism, I recommend using correct grammar – i.e. “you’re” rather than “your.” They have completely different meanings, and you don’t want to come across as uneducated or an idiot.

      Rex,

Thanks for the comments and feedback!! I apologize for the spelling and grammar, but I honestly do everything myself for this website including proof reading. Unfortunately spelling and grammar are not my best act. Believe me, if I could justify paying somebody to do it, I would. Hopefully the majority will understand and not think I’m a total idiot ;) The content is pretty good otherwise I think.

      Thanks again,
      Jay
