How to: Intro to Product Photography using the Sony Nex-5n

Screen shot 2011-11-10 at 4.01.03 AM

In this video tutorial I’ll show you how I photographed the Sony Alpha 77 and the Sony Alpha 580 using the Sony Nex-5n. Pretty simple and strait forward process I must admit. To keep things very simple I used natural warm sunlight out on the deck with a 48″ circular diffuser on a light stand.

I then set up two tables to raise up the camera equipment so the background was above the deck railing. I then used to pieces of matte photo paper over lapped so the top piece is in front.

This hides the over lappingĀ  seam from the camera perspective. I usually pull the back piece of paper up and tape it to a chair or wall. This creates a white backdrop, but since it’s the last days of fall in my town I figured I would do half white and half fall ;)

  1. That’s nice if you have the light, but most product photography normally requires using strobes. Do you have a work around for attaching pocket wizards to the 5n? Shooting the camera’s flash into the slaves just isn’t reliable enough when I have strobes out of sight. Any suggestions?

    thanks jeff

Not much you can do Jeff except us a bunch of 100watt Halogens and diffusers, or natural light. Tripping it with the flash will work, but the results usually suck in my experience. The Nex-5n is designed for studio use, but the Nex-7 is as it has the Hot shoe which will accommodate a hot shoe adapter and then your flash trigger.

      I hope that helps ;)

      Jay
